Some Words About Indoor Water Parks

Aquatic parks are perfect for entertainment and leisure for every family member:fathers can splash around a bit and then settle down and relax while having a cup of tea and browse his newspaper; mother can cover herself with sunblock and relax in the sun, while the little ones want to go on all slides they can see, and grandmother keeps an eye out for suspicious behavior. In the summer, this is certainly a delightful way to relax, but what can we do when it's too cold to stay outside and get a tan? The answer is easy: try an indoor water park!

Indoor aqua parks were first made in Canada, in the 80's, and in a few years their popularity grew at a fast rate, first in the US, and then in Europe. The Canadian World Waterpark (as they named it), was placed in a huge shopping mall in the town of Edmonton, and it became very fashionable. The reason? There are a lot of cloudy days per year in this place, and it is a city very far from any beach: the Pacific Ocean is 1450 km away, and beautiful Hudson Bay is 1300 km away (not that there are many places resembling a beach at Hudson Bay).

This is the reason why the indoor water park in Edmonton was an excellent idea, and locals started coming in large numbers...and they keep doing it even now. People love the water slides, the big river (they created a "sluggish river" which is loads of fun), the body slides,3+ rides,tube slides , and all the stuff a good indoor aqua park is made out of.

Talking about good indoor water parks, remember that there are numerous conditions that have such a place meet the standards: a good water park should have more than 2 tube slides, two body slides, one river (be it slow or "angry" torrent), one youngsters play zone with everything they would possibly wish (geysers, slides, sand etc), one wave pool and other things.

In 2010, in the European continent, you are able to go to dozens, if not hundreds of very good indoor aquatic parks. In Germany, as a matter of fact, in Stralsund, you will find one of the most beautiful water parks of all: the Hansedom Water Park. It is not just indoor, it also offers visitors open parks and gardens, making it really captivating for visitors from around the continent. Besides the conditions I mentioned in the last paragraph, the Stralsund Water Park has lots of other features, like saunas, restaurants, fitness clubs, and much more. In their language such a park is named "freizeit park", which means "leisure park".

Other fascinating water parks can be found in France, the UK and Portugal, but we'll get to it another time. Few things are better than spending two or three days at a "freizeit park", don't think I'm lying. It's a pity we can't go there each Saturday and Sunday, but hey - what can we do... However, should you ever make the decision to go to such a park with your friends, don't forget to keep an eye on the little ones, as sometimes these slides and rivers can be a little dangerous.

However, when you sum it up, there number of accidents that happened at water parks is too small not to consider it negligible. So don't worry, and enjoy life at these indoor water parks!

Italy’s Carnevale d’Ivrea: Centuries of Flinging Oranges

Northern Italy is known for its pastoral scenery, small rural villages, and quaint communities and customs. The town of Ivrea, located in the Piemont region, fits that mold for most of the year. But during Ivrea’s annual carnival week in February, things get messy. The Carnevale d’Ivrea has been held each year for nearly two centuries, begun during the time of Napolean, when carnival activities of each city district were combined into a city-wide celebration. After the region was put back under Italian rule, the Carnevale d’Ivrea was continued as just one big festival that included all of the various districts. The people in town would dress up in period costumes and re-enact elements of the revolt held in the 12th century. The re-enactment traditionally includes the same assortment of characters: a miller’s daughter named Violetta, the Deputy Chancellor of the town, several generals from Napoleon’s army, joined by a marching band of pipers, flag bearers, and drummers.

The story told by the characters is based on a story from the 12th century, when the local duke instituted a regular tradition allowing him to spend one night with every woman in his territory just after she became married. Some citizens went along with this decree simply because they feared reprisals if they didn’t, but others took a stand. One young woman, Violetta, didn’t refuse the duke, she chopped off his head. As a result, a revolution was launched in the town, pitting the downtrodden citizens against politicians and oppressive rulers. Even now, Violetta is revered and remembered as an important symbol of freedom.

The Carnevale d’Ivrea lasts for a week, wrapping up just prior to Ash Wednesday with parades, music, a huge bonfire, and the most famous part of the festival - the battle of the oranges. The orange-pelting frenzy was added relatively recently to the carnival festivities, with the orange intended to symbolize the poor duke’s decapitated head after it was lobbed off by Violetta. The exact development of the orange battle is unclear, but evidently the townsfolk used apples and beans originally, before changing to oranges at some time in the early 20th century.

The orange free-for-all may look random, but it is actually quite organized. The citizens of Ivrea divide into nine teams, and they attack each other. Some of them are mounted in high carriages towering over the crowd, meant to represent the duke’s guards, and others toss oranges from street level. The teams in carriages all wear large helmets and other protective gear, and the citizens on the ground wear protective gear by no helmets. All participants in the battle is in costume. The oranges are fresh, firm, and are hurled with speed and accuracy, and can hurt their intended targets. For visitors who just want to watch without getting pelted, wearing a red cap will let the fruit flingers know that you’re just a spectator. However, anyone is welcome to join in the chaos by volunteering to join one of the teams.

The Battle of the Oranges is a very popular tourist attraction in Ivrea, as it caps off the week-long festival. After the battle, a ceremony is held at the town hall, where officials announce the winners of the battle, and then set fire to a fantastic bonfire. Townsfolk and tourists alike take part in post-battle revelry until the wee hours before retiring to relax and gather up their strength to get up the next day and tackle the massive pulpy mess that has been left behind. If you prefer to sit at home clean and dry, there are several great collections of photos and videos online posted by people who were courageous enough to take their cameras right into the thick of the battle. But if you’re a brave soul who wants to experience one of the greatest, albeit messiest, vacations you’ve ever enjoyed, then you need to head to Ivrea in February for a memorable fruit-flinging festival!

Sleep is Food for the Brain

Sleep is food for the brain. During sleep, important body functions and brain activity occur. Skipping sleep can be harmful and even deadly, particularly if you are behind the wheel. You can look bad, you may feel moody, and you perform poorly. Sleepiness can make it hard to get along with your family and friends and affect your performance at school or work. As a reminder, a brain that is hungry for sleep will get it, even when you don’t expect it. For example, drowsiness and falling asleep at the wheel cause more than 100,000 car crashes every year. When you do not get enough sleep, you are more likely to have an accident, injury and/or illness.

Sleep is vital to your well-being, as important as the air you breathe, the water you drink and the food you eat. It can even help you to eat better and manage the stress of being a teen. Biological sleep patterns shift toward later times for both sleeping and waking during adolescence -- meaning it is natural to not be able to fall asleep before 11 pm.

Teens need about 9 1/4 hours of sleep each night to function best (for some, 8 1/2 hours is enough.) Most teens do not get enough sleep. One study found that only 15% reported sleeping 8 1/2 hours on school nights.

Not getting enough sleep or having sleep difficulties can:

* Limit your ability to learn, listen, concentrate and solve problems. You may even forget important information like names, numbers, your homework or a date with a special person in your life;
* Make you more prone to pimples. Lack of sleep can contribute to acne and other skin problems;
* Lead to aggressive or inappropriate behavior such as yelling at your friends or being impatient with teachers or family members;
* Cause you to eat too much or eat unhealthy foods like sweets and fried foods that lead to weight gain;
* Heighten the effects of alcohol and possibly increase use of caffeine and nicotine; and
* Contribute to illness, not using equipment safely or driving drowsy.

Make sleep a priority. Maintain a regular bed and wake time schedule including weekends. Find a way to relax before bedtime either through relaxing music or an environment that is dark and comfortable. Make sure your mattress and pillows are not broken down. Avoid eating, exercising, using caffeine and alcohol or smoking before bedtime.
Along with the physical changes that occur due to lack of sleep, changes to our sleep patterns are a part of the normal aging process. As people age, they tend to have a harder time falling asleep and more trouble staying asleep than when they were younger. It is a common misconception that sleep needs decline with age. More information on sleep can be found on the National Sleep Foundation’s website.

3 Health Insurance Misconceptions

Co-Insurance levels should be given careful analysis when buying insurance. A health insurance plan premium with an 80/20 or 20% co-insurance level is much higher typically than is a 50/50 or a 50% plan. Co-insurance or shared costs between the insured and the insurance company normally have stop losses or Maximum Out-Of-Pocket amounts to protect you against a catastrophic event. Make sure there is, and you know what the stop loss is on the plan you are looking at. Let's further examine and break down co-insurance.

Example:

Health insurance plan A has a $2,000 deductible and is an 80/20 plan. (Meaning you co-insure 20% after your deductible of $2,000) Let’s say your stop loss (maximum out of pocket) is $3,000, (which means you're total out of pocket would be $5,000 on this plan and the plan costs $380 per month for a family of 5.

On the other hand health insurance plan B has a $5,000 deductible but is a 100% plan. (Meaning you have no co-insurance after your deductible of $5,000) Your stop loss (maximum out of pocket) is zero after your deductible and this plan costs you $290 per month.

Both plans have 100% coverage after your stop loss, (maximum out of pocket) has been met.

Your stop loss (maximum out of pocket) for plan A would be $5,000 per year. ($2,000 deductible + $3,000 co-insurance).

Your stop loss (maximum out of pocket) for the plan B would be $5,000 per year as well. ($5,000 deductible + $0 co-insurance).

Your total risk "potential loss" or exposure would be $5,000 in any given year on either plan.

So in this example, on plan A you would be paying an extra $1,080 per year for the exact same out of pocket catastrophic exposure compared to plan B.

Wouldn’t it make more sense financially to select plan B as opposed to plan A? When it comes to choosing a health plan these are the things most people overlook, or fail to understand. When you choose Colorado Health Solutions to represent you, we will inform and educate you of these types of things to make sure you select the right plan at a price you can afford.

Misconception #2:

Deductibles

Health insurance companies will charge you a "fool's premium" for a very low deductible. By "fool's premium" we mean that to lower your deductible from say $2,000 to $500, they will charge you an additional $2,880 a year. So unless you manage to have a catastrophic event in the first 6 months of your plan, you will always be the loser. Look carefully at the cost for different deductibles and ask yourself a couple questions:

How much does it cost for the next lowest and the next highest deductible?

How many months will it take before you have lost the advantage of the lower deductible by paying the difference in premiums?

Of course you could wind up in the hospital next month and call me up with an "I told you so". However, 99% of you will never reach your deductible. There is normally a trade off between costs and benefits and typically it's represented graphically by a curve of "diminishing returns".

Misconception #3:

Co-pays

A $20 doctor office co-pay is much more expensive than a $40 doctor office co-pay! How you ask? Let’s take a closer look.

Let's assume that the premium associated with a $20 co-pay is an additional $174 per month in premium for a family of 4 when compared to a $40 co-pay. (This is a real scenario)

In this scenario you would be paying an additional premium of $174 per month ($2,088 per year) to protect yourself against a "potential loss" or exposure of $20 each time you visited the doctor’s office. To come out even with the $20 co-pay you'd have to visit the doctor about 105 times a year to come out even! Don't pay a "fools premium" for benefits that are offset by increased premiums. It pays to do a little math when looking at cost versus benefits when purchasing health insurance. Again we can help you decipher this and choose the right plan.

We hope this will help you now or sometime in the future, what I tell my clients is this...You already pay enough for your health insurance, don't pay more than you have to!

Health insurance carriers are coming out with new more affordable plans all the time, how will you know if one is right for you? Would your agent call you if there was one better suited for your needs? Most likely not! Most agents/brokers will only talk to you if there is something in it for them! We here at Colorado Health Solutions have a completely different attitude and approach, if there is something that becomes available best suited for you and your family we will let you know!

There has been a new major medical plan that was just released that is on average 20-40% less than many of the other carriers. If you'd like to get a quote on this plan to either get health insurance or lower your premiums just visit our website today, we'd be happy to help. Again, don't pay more than you have to when it comes to your health insurance!
